Aviation Briefing
1 March 1912: At Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, Captain Albert Berry, United States Army, made the first parachute jump from an airplane.
Pilot Antony H. Jannus and Captain Berry took off from Kinloch Field, a balloon-launching field in Kinloch Park, (now, Lambert–St. Louis International Airport, STL) and flew aboard a 1911 Benoist Type XII School Plane, 18 miles to the drop zone at Jefferson Barracks. The airplane was a pusher biplane which was based on a Curtiss pusher, and is also called the Benoist Headless.
Barry had his parachute packed inside a conical container mounted beneath the airplane’s lower wing. They climbed to an altitude of 1,500 feet.
When they reached the desired altitude and were over the barracks’ parade grounds, Berry attached the parachute to a harness that he was wearing, then lowered himself on a trapeze-like bar suspended in front of the wings. He pulled a lanyard which released him. The parachute was opened by a static line.
Captain Berry landed safely.
Berry had previously parachuted from balloons. He was asked if he would repeat the jump from an airplane. “Never again! I believe I turned five somersaults on my way down. . . My course downward. . . was like a crazy arrow. I was not prepared for the violent sensation that I felt when I broke away from the aeroplane.”
Weekly Color Guard Practice at 17:45 on Thursdays – 2Lt Kimberly Larson opened the Cadet Color Guard to all Cadets.
Active Shooter Presentation – Chaplain, Lt Col Joseph Burton.

02-03 Jun 2018 Discover Aviation Days at the Anoka County Airport. This is the largest free fly-in event in MN that features many warbirds and other aircraft. Event organizers have requested help from Civil Air Patrol’s Anoka County Composite Squadron (ANE), as usual. CAP is tasked with parking all aircraft, presenting the colors, staffing a recruiting booth, and generally helping to keep the public safe around these complex machines.
There will be a new layout for aircraft parking this year that covers a larger area and as a result we will need more personnel than in previous years. The Anoka County Composite Squadron (ANE) will not be able to do this alone, so we will be looking for individuals willing to help with the following roles with certain minimum requirements.
* Ramp Supervisors – FLS Trainee rating or higher or FLM with substanti=
al previous experience, some preferably at this event.
* Assistant Supervisors – FLM Rating with multiple flight line marshall=
ing experiences.
* Flight Line Marshallers – FLM Trainee Rating. Preferably with at lea=
st one previous flight line marshalling experience.
* Crowd Control Personnel – General Emergency Services (GES), no previo=
us flight line experience necessary.
* Van Drivers (1-2) – CAP Driver’s License
Again, the dates are 02-03 June and shifts will run from 0600 to 1730 each day. ANE will have two shifts per day and anticipate needing about 50 personnel for each shift.
ANE is not yet accepting volunteer applications.
05-08 Apr 2018 Shrine Circus – Lt Col David Yost sent around a clipboard with a volunteer work schedule.
SAVE THE DATES 08-10 Jun 2018 MNWG SAR Eval at Alexandria, MN (KAXN). This will be a CAP USAF observed exercise. MNWG will need to provide our own simulations. Alexandra will be our host squadron.
Looking for mission staff to fill all the staff positions. Please email Maj Tom FItzhenry, so that he can get the mission base positions filled as soon as possible.
We expect all available CAP aircraft to participate. We will need assistance with communications since this is a new location. Ground teams also needed.
